/>

Entertainment

Four Screen

Location Based Services

The pressure is on…

Summary from a webinar by Search Marketing Now.

Today there are so many sources available that it’s not possible to measure all signals around. Still, a comprehensive and consistent tracking of social media efforts can trigger significant business opportunities.

Adding tracking codes to all campaigns is the start of measuring the effects. The results are more complete when also newsletters, email signatures, conversion points of the website are tagged. Obviously major social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or LinkedIn should be included.

Typically the following tags for campaign tracking will provide a wealth of information:

&utm_campaign=YOUR_CAMPAIGN_NAME

&utm_source=YOUR_MEDIA_CHANNELS

&utm_medium=BLOG_or_MAIL_or_NEWSLETTER_etc

An example would look like http://example.com/name-of-article&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=name-of-article&utm_campaign=socialmedia

As per usual, before we measure things, we should think about compelling content first that people will want to share… Successful topics on one’s website or blog should be identified in order to understand the audience’s needs and interest. On which social media channels do they share your content? What is the correlation between organic search visibility and links from social networks? What measures do competitors take?

Identify Topics that Buzz for your Business

Example: ‘highrankings.com’ is analyzed in SearchMetrics’ tool.

The outstanding bubble on the upper right is about a popular forum with lots of social media shares. Probably you want to create even more content like the one that is currently popular with an audience.

SearchMetrics’ tool will also visualize the social spread across major social media networks.

Traffic competitors can be identified in order to analyze their activities and potentially compete on the same terms.

Content Tagging

The Google URL Builder Tool compiles the tagged link for a given landing page via a wizard.

There are also bookmarklets available that will allow for compilation of a tagged link from any page in the browser. This will go into an URL-shortener service that will come up with a nicely short tagged URL.

Content Analysis

The analytics results can be visualized in different ways. E.g. Google Analytics or alternative tools like Getclicky.com let you slice and dice the information in numerous ways. You will want to optimize your marketing efforts based on these statistics.

Google+ is bringing surprisingly much traffic. And it’s expected to rise even more now that Google is pushing hard for their inhouse social media service.

Real time analytics as available on Google Analytics are addictive, make sure you don’t watch your stats all day long

Conversions via social media are usually relatively low, potentially within the 0.5% range: It’s rare that someone reads a tweet and goes buying your product. Hence it’s more important to track little steps like newsletter sign-ups, file downloads, send-a-friend, fan on Facebook, follow on Twitter, etc.

Funnel analysis

Google Analytics now offers sophisticated funnel analysis visualization.

Tagged URLs are sometimes stripped on their way through the countless switches on the world wide web. Therefore it’s important to also check the referrals such as t.co for Twitter in the traffic statistics.

The secondary dimension ‘Landing Page’ can help identifying sources with indecipherable referral URLs.

Advanced Segments in Google Analytics allow for different views of the comprehensive data set.

The Twitter URL signature can be a significant traffic driver. Make sure you lead that traffic to a well converting page, potentially not the homepage but maybe the newsletter subscribing page!

With tagged URLs you may end up with different URLs for the same content, hence the need for the canonical tag in order to avoid duplicate content issues with search engines. The canonical tag will tell Google, Bing and the sorts which is the ‘original content’ URL and that they should ignore all other URLs that start with the same domain and address but have tagging information attached after the URL’s question mark.

Also praktisch allen Bereichen eines Unternehmens.

Rand Fishkin is CEO & Co-founder of the SEO software company SEOMoz.

What’s behind the latest Google freshness update

How to build freshness into content for a large website

How content, ranking, and SEO are intertwined

SEO expert Rand Fishkin of SEOMoz reviews some of the recent changes in Google’s algorithms for freshness.

‘Search engines likes fresh content’ means that new content will rank higher for a given time. Sports results, movie reviews, etc. are very date sensitive.

A spike in a given search and its trend over time gives Google hints about the freshness of content. A lot of new content around a certain topic, especially from trusted sources such as Google News, is also a good signal for fresh content.

But how do search engines distinguish fresh content from older content?

Obviously publishing new genuine, never before seen content counts as fresh content. It may get tweeted, liked and +1 feedback that adds to the trigger.

Changing the publication date of a page won’t do the trick. Nor will an updated Twitter stream in the sidebar count as fresh page. SEO is a bit more complex than that…

But adding an ‘update’ with additional information may be helpful. It will take a certain amount of new content for Google to interpret an ‘old’ page as fresh, though. Cosmetic changes don’t count.

<img
class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-3371" title="ways-search-engines-evaluate-freshness-seo-seomoz" src="http://e-byz.ch/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ways-search-engines-evaluate-freshness-seo-seomoz-438x329.gif" alt="Ways search engines evaluate the freshness of content. title="Freshness Factor: 10 Illustrations on How Fresh Content Can Influence Rankings" href="http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-fresh-factor" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">freshness factor on their blog.

Most websites have a few stellar articles that are found consistently in search engines and attract a lot of organic traffic. Eventually even those posts may be pushed out of the SERPs by fresher content. Therefore updating those strategicly important pages is a good idea.

Consistent publishing of fresh content will help with new traffic, earn you reputation and links and eventually lead to being a trusted source.

Social signals are key both in Google (Google Plus) and Bing (Cooperation with Facebook). Together with Twitter these three social networks are key to successful publishing.

<img

Together with nice web features such as browsers, bookmarks, caching, gui, security, etc. new applications and new business opportunities will emerge quickly.

One challenge is to provide the involved technologies to tech-savvy people and not only specialised developers. The AutoWoT toolkit is supposed to facilitate this. Even drag and drop development toolkits are available for putting together simple use cases such as interactive light sensors.

Devices can be published via Facebook including access rights. Smart meters in homes could be accessed from anywhere and shared with friends.

RESTful EPCIS is a procedure for tracking tagged objects and visualise their whereabouts on Google Maps. Customers could check that their bananas are indeed coming from a proper De Havelaar plant.

The global scale of such services is a next challenge: How can remote devices be found and identified? How will the infrastructure of smart things evolve?

Webservers or cameras today are tiny. They can be built into more or less any physical device.

Firewalls often times are the relevant hurdle to overcome. Getting outside the firewall, though, is relatively easy. LindenLabs introduced a relay proxy that allows small embedded web services to be accessible behind firewalls without need for special open ports.

Applications include monitoring of bridges, trees, hearing aid fittings, etc.

Users want the device access to be secure, controlled and manageable. Web-enabling a product like a book, say a Kindle, the product becomes a service. People will want to consume the content on the platform of their choice, be it mobile or on TV.

It’s crucial to keep the service up and running at all times.

Also legal questions may arise: who is the owner of the content?
And the user interface is very important, too. Customers rate their end-to-end experience: If the GUI is not up to par it may harm the whole product offering as an American car model showed that had not actually changed except for the GUI of the board computer.

Yaler GmbH is a start-up that helps companies build IoT services via the relay server. Hosting such a service is not everybody’s core knowledge.

The Web of Things WoT consists of RESTful web services that bring together different services.

The Internet of Things IoT sort of kicked off around 1990 with remote robots being connected via TCP/IP. They could be configured and steered via the internet.

Around the year 2000 Oberon monitored 10’000 sensor tags in a hydro-power plant in Brazil. This helped them build their experience about monitoring services on a global scale.

Today services include integration of hearing aid users via their smartphones (bluetooth) and acoustic experts that can support with the configuration of the different hearing aid programs via web clients from their office. Also audiologists can support the fine tuning of hearing aids over the web. This comes in especially handy in places like Australia where the next audiologist may be several hours away.

But, as per usual, it’s sometimes hard to teach old horses new tricks, i.e. even companies with a proven innovation culture not always openly embrace the new technology.

IoT projects need to bridge the gap between business models of selling boxes and potentially new models like maintaining online services via the web.

For customers to rely on such a remote service it takes convincing offerings, customers that have tried similar projects themselves and failed and a web savvy CEO that knows the difficulties involved and has the willingness to overcome the typical problems.

FedEx uses IoT sensors when they transport delicate freight, such as living organisms.

Geiger counters are very popular these days in Japan. People set them up and connect them to the internet.

The Internet of Things, despite a lot of experience, is still in its infancy. Corporations tend to shy away from relying on remote suppliers in closed systems.
In contrast, makers go offensively about the Web of Things, invest in relatively low-cost hardware and invent new business models. Start-ups are good at inventing new models based on pay-per-use.

<br
